President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), one of Nigeria’s highest national honours, on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The ceremony took place during the Nigeria-India Bilateral Meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

President Tinubu explained that the award symbolises Nigeria’s appreciation for its partnership with India and the desire to strengthen bilateral relations.

“Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India, and we work to deepen and broaden the same to the mutual benefit of our two friendly countries,” Tinubu stated.

Praising Modi’s leadership, Tinubu added, “You represent a very strong commitment to democratic values and norms. Winning three consecutive elections in a complex society is a feat that we respect so much.

“I will confer on you today, the Prime Minister of India, Nigeria’s National Honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger. This signifies Nigerian appreciation and commitment to India as a partner.”

Prime Minister Modi, while accepting the honour, expressed solidarity with Nigeria over the devastating floods that have recently affected several cities, including Maiduguri.

He pledged India’s support by donating 20 tons of relief materials to assist Nigeria’s ongoing humanitarian efforts.
