TikTok has removed over 2.1 million videos in Nigeria during the second quarter of 2024 for breaching its community guidelines. This move is part of the platform’s ongoing efforts to strengthen content moderation and ensure user safety.
In its Community Guidelines Enforcement Report released on Tuesday, TikTok revealed that the videos removed accounted for less than 1 per cent of total uploads in Nigeria during this period.
“Key findings show that 99.1 per cent of these videos were proactively removed before users reported them, with 90.7 per cent taken down within 24 hours,” the report stated.
TikTok highlighted its commitment to staying ahead of harmful content, saying it continues to invest in technology to improve content moderation and manage potential risks.
The platform stressed its dedication to transparency and the safety of its diverse user base in Nigeria and globally.
Globally, TikTok removed over 178 million videos in June 2024, with 144 million taken down through automated systems.
“With a proactive detection rate now at 98.2 percent globally, TikTok is more efficient than ever at addressing harmful content before users encounter it,” the platform added.
TikTok, owned by ByteDance, operates under a structure where 60 per cent of the company is owned by global institutional investors, while 20 per cent is held by its founders and 20 per cent by employees.
