TikTok has removed more than 2 million videos in Nigeria between July and September 2024, citing violations of its community guidelines.
In its latest Q3 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, the social media platform said 99.1% of the removed content was taken down within 24 hours, underscoring its commitment to online safety.
“With over a billion people around the world using the platform and millions of pieces of content posted every day, TikTok continues to invest in technologies which improve content understanding and assess potential risks, allowing the platform to remove harmful content before it reaches viewers,” the report stated.
TikTok also disclosed that its proactive detection rate globally now stands at 98.2%, making content moderation more efficient.
Between July and September 2024, the platform removed over 147 million videos worldwide, with 118 million taken down through automation.
In Nigeria, 92.1% of all removed videos were taken down before users reported them.
The most common violations included “sensitive and mature themes,” “regulated goods and commercial activities,” and “mental and behavioural health.”
The report noted, “99.4% of videos with sensitive themes were removed before any user reports.
“Similarly, 99.1% of content involving regulated goods, such as attempts to defraud users or trade prohibited items like firearms, was taken down preemptively. Mental and behavioural health content removals reached 99.9% before any user reports.”
TikTok reaffirmed its commitment to user safety, adding, “TikTok’s mission to inspire creativity and bring joy is underpinned by a strong commitment to user safety, well-being, and content integrity.”
The platform also stressed ongoing investments in trust and safety personnel and advanced technology to enforce its guidelines.
“The Q3 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report highlights TikTok’s leadership in content moderation and safety standards, ensuring a secure and positive platform experience for Nigerian users,” the company stated.
