Telcos Accuse Gov’t of Throttling Internet to Quash Hunger Protests

Telecommunication operators in Nigeria have leveled accusations against the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), alleging that these bodies are deliberately slowing internet speeds across the country.

This interference comes amid the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, which have seen widespread participation from citizens frustrated by the state of governance in the country.

According to reports from Peoples Gazette, telecom operators claim that the intentional slowing of internet speeds is a tactic to suppress the flow of information from protesters to other Nigerians and the global community.

An administration official, who confirmed the internet interference, stated that isolating the protesters from international support would make it easier for the government to manage the unfolding crisis.

The telecom operators’ confirmation of the government’s interference has sparked widespread criticism and concerns about censorship.

Many Nigerians, including demonstrators, view the poor network connections as an effort to stifle the protests and limit the dissemination of information about the movement.

As the #EndBadGovernance protests continue, the actions of the NCC and NSA, along with the response from telecom operators, remain under intense scrutiny both domestically and internationally.

The situation highlights the broader issues of freedom of expression and access to information in the face of governmental control and censorship.
