An early-morning inferno caused by a fallen tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) destroyed numerous vehicles in the Ibafo area of the Obafemi Owode Local Government, Ogun State, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker driver is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing him to lose control, which led to the tanker’s fall and eventual explosion. The fire quickly spread to nearby vehicles parked at a filling station.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement, confirmed the incident, stating that while several vehicles were destroyed, no lives were lost.
The spilled petrol traveled through a drainage system, spreading the fire to a community about one kilometre away. Several buildings in the area sustained damage, including shattered windows, damaged roofs, and cracked walls.
Though the Ogun State Fire Service responded and eventually brought the fire under control, many individuals reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The situation has left the community reeling from the aftermath of the blaze.
