The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has revealed that over 30 states have conducted elections for local government councils following the Supreme Court’s decision granting financial autonomy to local governments nationwide.

This was disclosed in a communiqué issued on Tuesday after ALGON’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the Hillside Royal Hotel in Katsina State on December 14, 2024.

The association expressed its gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support in empowering local governments to carry out their constitutional responsibilities.

It also commended the judiciary for fostering a viable local government system that reflects the will of the people.

ALGON acknowledged state governors and the Nigeria Governors Forum for their role in organising local government elections.

The communiqué urged the few remaining states to follow suit to ensure a people-oriented governance system.

“The NEC appreciated the efforts of state Governors and the Nigeria Governors Forum in conducting elections across local government areas, with over 30 states now having democratically elected chairmen.

“The remaining states are hereby urged to follow suit so as to fully have a system that is people-oriented according to the vision of Mr. President.”

ALGON also praised governors for allowing local councils to function freely, ensuring the delivery of democratic dividends to the grassroots.

“NEC also appreciates the Governors for the uninterrupted access given to them to run their local councils in the various states which has gone far in ensuring the democratic dividends needed get to the people.

“This is assuring the Governors of a continued robust relationship as our principals to have governance at heart.”

Reaffirming its commitment to good governance, ALGON pledged to foster strong relationships with stakeholders, promote transparency, and deliver effective services through improved community engagement.

“In reaffirming its dedication to good governance, the NEC pledged to deepen its symbiotic relationship with stakeholders, promoting transparency, accountability, innovative service, and uniformity in service delivery at the grassroots level through effective communication and community engagement which is a bedrock for open governance.”
