The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in their final Group D game of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Despite the loss, Nigeria had already secured qualification for the tournament, topping the group with 11 points.
However, the game served as a bitter end to their qualifying campaign, especially in front of their home fans.
The first half ended goalless, with a notable save from the Rwandan goalkeeper denying Kelechi Iheanacho’s effort.
The Super Eagles dominated possession but failed to break the deadlock.
Samuel Chukwueze, who replaced Iheanacho at halftime, made an instant impact by scoring a brilliant solo goal in the 59th minute, giving Nigeria a 1-0 lead.
The winger displayed great composure and skill to finish past the Rwandan defense.
However, the Amavubi showed resilience, equalizing through Mutsinzi A. in the 72nd minute.
Just three minutes later, Nshuti I. capitalized on a defensive lapse to net the winner, stunning the Nigerian team and fans.
In response, head coach Augustine Eguavoen introduced Victor Osimhen and Sadiq Umar to bolster the attack, but their efforts were unable to produce a comeback.
The defeat leaves questions about Nigeria’s consistency, though their qualification ensures their place in the competition.
For Rwanda, the victory was a morale booster despite failing to qualify.
With the group stage concluded, attention now shifts to preparing for the AFCON finals, where the Super Eagles will aim to rectify their mistakes and compete for continental glory.
