Two policemen were, on Monday, shot dead while two others sustained injuries in a clash between Soldiers and police officers at the Independent National Electoral Commission Collation Centre in Jalingo, Taraba State.
According to eye witnesses, a minor disagreement between soldiers and policemen guarding INEC headquarters in the state degenerated into a violence that lasted about one hour.
It was learnt that soldiers, who sent policemen away from the INEC collation centre, later invaded police headquarters and chased away police officers on duty.
Sources said policemen injured in the violence are now being treated at the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo.
Also, several vehicles parked inside the police headquarters were reportedly smashed and vandalised during the incident.
Sporadic shots sent many residents of the area scampering to safety, as shops, markets and houses were hurriedly shut.
State Police Commissioner, Suleiman Amodu, said at a joint press conference that a high-powered investigative panel would be set up to establish the cause of the clash between the soldiers and the policemen.
Commandant, 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Jalingo, Brig General Frank Etim, and the state Director of the Department of State Services attended the press conference.
