Renowned Islamic cleric, Sheik Ahmad Gumi, has condemned the recent release of a list of alleged terrorist financiers by the federal government.
The Nigerian government, through The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), disclosed 15 entities purportedly involved in funding terrorism operations within the country.
At the forefront of this list is Gumi’s associate and Kaduna-based publisher, Tukur Mamu, who is currently facing trial by the Federal Government for his alleged involvement in aiding the terrorists responsible for the March 2022 Abuja-Kaduna train attack.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s Media Aide, Bashir Ahmad, took to X to announce the release of the names and express hopes that the implicated individuals would face legal consequences for their actions.
In response to the list during a forum organized by Daily Trust, Sheik Ahmad Gumi voiced his concerns, stating, “Mamu’s case is in the court. Let’s wait to hear from the court. It’s wrong to resort to media trial. Let’s wait for the court to state whether he is a financier or not. I think if he is acquitted, he has a strong case to make on libel.”
Gumi further questioned the authority behind labeling individuals as terrorist financiers, asserting, “Who declares someone a terrorist financier? Is it the court of law or a security agency? Security agency has no right to declare anyone a terrorist financier.”
The cleric emphasized the importance of due process, advocating for the court to be allowed to make impartial judgments based on evidence. He also highlighted the complexities of his interactions with various individuals, noting that as a preacher, he cannot turn away anyone seeking guidance, regardless of their background.
Regarding Mamu’s arrest, Gumi characterized it as a misunderstanding between Mamu and the committee responsible for handling the release of certain victims. He reiterated the need for a fair trial and urged authorities to present concrete evidence in court.
Gumi concluded by reiterating his stance on justice, stating, “That is what we wanted all along; take him to court. Instead of incarcerating someone and levelling phantom allegations against him. Bring your proofs, and if Mamu is found guilty, he should have full-fledged punishment. But as of what I know, let’s wait for the court.”
