Rivers Govt Sets Up Judicial Commission to Investigate Post LG Elections Violence

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has approved the creation of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the arson, killings, and widespread destruction of property that occurred at local government council headquarters on October 7, 2024.

In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, it was explained that the governor’s authority to establish the commission is based on Section 2 of the Commissions of Inquiry Law, Cap 30, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.

The statement said, “His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, Governor of Rivers State, has approved the Setting-up of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the arson, killings, and wanton destruction of property at some Local Government Council Headquarters which occurred on or about Monday, October 7, 2024.”

The commission will be chaired by Justice I.R. Minakiri, with Inyingi Brown as Secretary. Other members include Felicia Nwoke, Professor Blessing Didia, Samuel Egbe, and Venerable Alex Usifor. Uzor Ikenga will serve as counsel to the commission.

The statement said the committee would be sworn in on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, in the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt.
