Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged security agencies in the state to develop and deploy effective strategies to ensure the safety of lives and property during the festive season.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Mr. Lanre Ogunlowo, at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the governor stressed the importance of heightened vigilance as the Christmas period approaches.
“As we approach the yuletide, this period often comes with security challenges. Those who engage in nefarious activities tend to become desperate. I urge you to design strategies to ensure a peaceful season so that residents can celebrate without fear of lawlessness,” Abiodun said.
Highlighting Ogun’s unique geographical position, sharing borders with four states and an international boundary, Abiodun noted the influx of people and its attendant security concerns. He commended the state’s Security Trust Fund for providing modern equipment and logistics, which have contributed to Ogun being one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states.
The governor also underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration and praised the Inspector-General of Police for deploying a competent officer to the state, equipped with two Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to enhance security.
“Security is foundational to socio-economic development. Ogun State’s third position in Internally Generated Revenue would not have been possible without a secure environment,” Abiodun added.
The governor further called on the new commissioner to tackle cultism, prevalent in some areas of the state, by liaising with sister security agencies to find lasting solutions.
In his response, CP Lanre Ogunlowo assured the governor of his commitment to building on the existing security framework. He promised to address cultism, deploy the APCs approved by the IGP, and implement strategies to gain the trust of Ogun residents.
“I have a good team on the ground, and with the support of the government and other security agencies, we will ensure the safety of lives and property during this season and beyond. We urge residents to support our efforts,” Ogunlowo said.
The police commissioner also emphasized the need for public cooperation, encouraging everyone to enjoy the festive season responsibly and respect the rights of others.
“Criminals should stay away, as we will be on the ground to ensure Ogun residents have a peaceful and joyous celebration,” he concluded.
