Rangers International Crash Out of CAF Champions League

Gifted Markson

Rangers International’s journey in this season’s CAF Champions League has come to a disappointing end, as the Nigerian champions were knocked out by Angolan side, Sagrada Esperança. Despite a spirited effort, Rangers were eliminated on a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.

After a 2-2 draw in the first leg at home, the Flying Antelopes traveled to Angola, needing at least a draw to progress. However, Sagrada Esperança secured a narrow 1-0 win in the return leg, sealing their place in the next round and ending Rangers’ hopes of advancing in the competition.

The loss marks a tough blow for Nigerian football, as expectations were high for Rangers International, the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, to make a strong run in the continental tournament.

Despite their domestic success, the Enugu-based club struggled to translate their form to the continental stage.

Rangers International’s exit is certainly disappointing for Nigerian football, especially given the club’s rich history and recent resurgence. While the team put up a brave fight, the defensive lapses in the home leg and the inability to secure an away result proved costly.

This result also raises broader questions about the readiness and competitiveness of Nigerian clubs in continental tournaments. To perform better, more investment in squad depth, tactical preparation, and infrastructure will be essential.

For Rangers, they will now have to refocus on their domestic campaign and use this setback as motivation to come back stronger next season.
