Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations while ensuring public safety in his latest statement on the #EndBadGovernance protests sweeping across Nigeria.
In a post on his X account, Governor Mohammed stated, “I affirm that peaceful demonstration is a fundamental aspect of democracy, allowing people to voice their grievances. However, it is our duty as the government to protect innocent citizens and ensure that law and order do not collapse or escalate into chaos.”
Addressing an emergency security meeting with heads of security agencies, traditional institutions, and religious groups, Mohammed acknowledged the impact of the national protests on Bauchi. He noted that the unrest has affected the Bauchi metropolis and the outskirts of Katagum Local Government Area, where some violent actions have been directed at authorities.
The governor cautioned, “I caution those disrupting and instigating unrest that the failure of the Federal Government is also a failure of State and Local Governments. As leaders, we must make necessary amendments to rebuild trust and ensure people feel connected despite the serious trust deficit in the country.”
Governor Mohammed reassured citizens of his administration’s commitment to addressing their needs and improving living conditions. He highlighted recent achievements, including the construction of over seven thousand classrooms, the development of more than fifteen hundred kilometers of roads, and the operation of three hundred thirteen primary healthcare centers. Additionally, he mentioned ongoing efforts to reposition traditional institutions.
In light of the current situation, the governor declared a state of emergency in Azare, expressing gratitude that the situation has remained less violent. “I thank Allah for making the situation less discomforting and less violent. I express my delight and appreciation to all stakeholders for their commitment and sportsmanship,” he added.
Governor Mohammed’s remarks underscore his administration’s dedication to both maintaining order and addressing the root causes of public discontent.
