The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has announced that officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) will soon be enrolled in the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS), ensuring they receive additional social benefits.
This development came during an advocacy visit to Force Headquarters on Friday, led by the Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Oluwaseun Faleye, alongside senior management of the Fund.
A statement by Nwachukwu Godson, General Manager, Corporate Affairs, said Egbetokun praised Faleye for the “radical changes” he has introduced at the NSITF and assured that the Police Force would work closely with the Fund to guarantee the scheme’s full implementation across the NPF.
He further committed to supporting the NSITF’s enforcement drive among both public and private sector employers.
“We are going to contribute to the Scheme. We will do everything possible. Whatever is stopping the NPF from contributing to the NSITF, we have to look into it and make sure that it works this time around,” Egbetokun affirmed.
He added, “I have been monitoring your activities since you became the MD of the NSITF, and I know you have brought radical changes to the Fund. The Nigerian Police Force will partner with you.”
Faleye, in his remarks, acknowledged the Police Force’s past non-compliance with the ECS but expressed optimism that the partnership would turn a new page. He commended the NPF for its sacrifices in securing the nation and explained the multiple benefits of the ECS, including disability benefits, death benefits, medical refunds, and compensation for the dependents of deceased officers.
He highlighted, “These benefits have significant effects on productivity because if the rank and file know that when injury or death arises in the course of work, their families and dependents will be compensated in accordance with the NSITF Act, gallantry will increase, confidence will be imbued, thus resulting in higher productivity.”
Faleye emphasized the importance of extending the ECS to the NPF, describing it as a deserving institution for social security coverage. He further outlined the occupational health and safety measures embedded in the ECS, aimed at preventing workplace accidents.
The event was attended by top police officials, including Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) Bala Ciroma, Ede Ayuba, Yahaya Abubaka, and Assistant Inspector General Rhoda Adetutu, among others. On the NSITF side, the delegation included Executive Directors Adegoke Adedeji (Finance & Investment), Prof. Gabriel Okenwa (Administration), and other senior management members of the Fund.
The meeting marks a significant step toward enhancing social security benefits for the Nigerian Police Force, with both parties expressing readiness for a strong partnership.
