The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has taken firm action against corruption within its ranks, as three officers accused of extorting N10 million from a group of young Nigerians have been arrested and detained on the orders of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The officers, ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine, were reportedly involved in a brazen extortion scheme in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
They allegedly approached a group of young people, coerced them into handing over the large sum of N10 million, and fled.
Responding swiftly to the incident, police authorities were able to recover the stolen money with the assistance of the new Assistant Inspector-General in charge of Zone 16.
In a statement released Friday, Force Headquarters spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrests, recovery of funds, and disciplinary proceedings against the officers.
The incident has raised concerns about ongoing issues of police misconduct, but the NPF’s decisive action is being seen by many as a step toward reform.
IGP Egbetokun has pledged to intensify efforts against corruption within the force, reaffirming a zero-tolerance policy for abuse of power by police personnel.
“The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of IGP Egbetokun, maintains a zero-tolerance policy for any act of corruption and police misconduct,” Adejobi emphasized, “and takes every allegation of extortion and abuse of power extremely seriously.”
IGP Egbetokun also assured the public that no officer would be above accountability, pledging to uphold justice and promising that the force will continue to prioritize public trust.
