In a significant breakthrough in the fight against crime in northern Nigeria, the police have apprehended a local manufacturer of AK-47 rifles and SMGs in Jos, Plateau State.
The operation, which underscores the alarming sophistication of local arms production, followed intelligence gathering and a covert mission to the manufacturer’s address.
The Commissioner of Police disclosed that the suspect demonstrated an ability to produce AK-47 rifles and submachine guns (SMGs) with precision, raising concerns about the proliferation of locally made arms in the region.
Beyond the arms manufacturer, the police also arrested several other suspects involved in activities that fuel criminal operations.
Among them were motorcycle dealers caught while attempting to purchase motorcycles for bandits, as well as illegal miners operating without permits.
The operation yielded significant recoveries, including 19 AK-47 rifles, an assortment of live ammunition, charms, Indian hemp, and cash exceeding ₦2.5 million. Equipment such as mining machines, an excavator, and other contraband were also seized.
The police have reiterated their commitment to curbing insecurity in the region, calling on citizens to provide credible information that can aid in combating criminal networks.
This development highlights the multifaceted nature of security challenges in the region, with a nexus between arms manufacturing, banditry, and illegal mining.
Security experts emphasize the importance of addressing these interconnected issues through a combination of enforcement, community engagement, and policy reforms.
Citizens have been urged to remain vigilant and proactive in supporting security agencies to ensure peace and stability in the area.
