…. I acted under influence of alcohol
The police in Ogun have arrested a 25-year-old man, Wasiu Bankole, for allegedly raping a 70-year-old grandmother (name withheld).
The suspect was arrested on Wednesday following a report by the victim at the Agbado Police Division.
The septuagenarian told the police that while she was asleep in her house on June 2, 2020 at the Abule Lemode area of Ijoko at about 8 pm, the suspect suddenly broke into her room, held her down and forcibly had sex with her against her consent.
The victim stated further that one of her neighbours, who heard her screaming, came to rescue her by hitting the suspect with a plank on his back.
She added that it was at this juncture that the suspect jumped off her and took to his heels naked, leaving behind his clothes, shoes and torchlight inside her room.
Upon the grandma’s report to the police, the Divisional Police Officer, Agbado Division, Superintendent Kuranga Yero, was said to have deployed detectives to search for and arrest the suspect.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said the detectives succeeded in arresting the suspect 24 hours later.
Oyeyemi said the suspect, during interrogation, confessed to committing the crime, but claimed to have acted under the influence of alcohol.
The PPRO added that the septuagenarian victim had been taken to hospital for medical attention.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.
