Authorities in Thailand have rescued an eight-year-old boy who was found living in squalid conditions among dogs and unable to speak human language, only barking to communicate.
According to multiple reports on Friday, the disturbing discovery was made during a welfare inspection at a dilapidated house in Lap Lae District, Uttaradit Province.
Photos circulating on social media show officials at the rundown house, surrounded by overgrown trees and several dogs.
The property, described as drug-infested and isolated, was home to the boy, his 46-year-old mother, and a 23-year-old brother both of whom tested positive for narcotics following a police raid.
The child, whose name has not been disclosed, had reportedly been completely cut off from human interaction, spending most of his time mimicking the family’s six dogs.
“He didn’t speak, he just barked. It was pitiful to see,” said Paveena Hongsakul, president of the Foundation for Children and Women, which assisted in the rescue operation.
Despite receiving a government education subsidy of 400 baht (£9), the mother never sent the boy to school.
“His mother hasn’t allowed him to go to school since she started getting the subsidy. After receiving the money, she just kept him at home,” Hongsakul revealed.
Local residents described the home as being in a “red zone” for drug activity.
A teacher familiar with the case added, “The boy had no one just the dogs to play with.”
Neighbours also admitted they discouraged their children from interacting with the boy due to concerns over the family’s erratic behaviour.

The case came to light when a concerned headteacher alerted authorities, prompting a joint operation by police and child welfare activists on June 30.
The boy has since been relocated to a children’s home, where he is receiving medical and psychological treatment.
Hongsakul confirmed her foundation will work closely with local agencies to monitor his progress and ensure he receives proper education and care.
“The boy will be given a chance at a good life. We’ll follow up with him to make sure he gets everything he needs,” she said.
The incident has drawn comparisons to rare cases of so-called “feral children,” such as Ukrainian girl Oxana Malaya, who was famously found living with dogs in 1991.
Experts warn that children raised without human contact face long-term developmental and psychological challenges.
Thai authorities have vowed to provide the rescued child with all necessary support to help him reintegrate into society and rebuild his life.
