Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, has reaffirmed the pivotal role of investing in Nigeria’s health and education sectors as crucial for national development.
In a statement shared via his official X handle on Tuesday, Obi emphasized that robust investment in these sectors is essential to overcoming the multifaceted challenges hindering the country’s progress.
Highlighting his commitment to bolstering these critical areas, Obi announced a personal donation of N10 million to the Grimard College of Nursing Sciences in Anyigba, Kogi State, located in North-central Nigeria.
He underscored the institution’s significant contribution to primary healthcare training and the nurturing of healthcare professionals who play vital roles in society.
“In my continued commitment to building a better nation through investments in human and national development—specifically health and education—I visited Grimard College of Nursing Sciences where I provided support of N10 million,” Obi stated.
Addressing the pressing issue of brain drain among healthcare workers, Obi expressed concern over the exodus of Nigerian professionals abroad and its detrimental impact on the country’s healthcare system.
He called for proactive measures to improve the welfare and skills enhancement of healthcare workers to mitigate this trend.
“As experts warn of a looming shortage of nurses, we must proactively invest in their training to meet domestic needs and contribute globally,” Obi remarked, emphasizing the critical role nurses play in primary healthcare delivery.
Obi’s advocacy extends beyond financial support, urging governments at all levels and donor agencies to prioritize investments in health and education.
He stressed the importance of addressing challenges within the primary healthcare subsector and enhancing educational opportunities to build a prosperous Nigeria.
The donation to Grimard College of Nursing Sciences reflects Obi’s broader vision to foster a New Nigeria characterized by accessible healthcare and quality education, ensuring societal progress and sustainable development.
