In a decisive move aimed at quelling speculation over looming political coalitions, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum on Monday announced that the party would not enter into any merger or coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This resolution was part of a communique issued at the end of a six-hour closed-door meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State. The Forum, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, made it clear that while the PDP stands firm as an independent political force, it remains open to receiving individuals, parties, and groups committed to rescuing Nigeria and promoting effective governance.
“The Forum resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or merger. However, as a major opposition party, it welcomes any party, persons, or groups willing to join it with a view to wrestling power and enthroning good leadership in 2027,” Mohammed said while reading the communique.
Internal Party Decisions and Insecurity Concerns
Reacting to the recent Supreme Court ruling over the PDP’s national secretary position, the Forum recommended that the Deputy National Secretary temporarily act in that capacity pending a formal nomination and ratification of a substantive secretary from the South East.
The governors also expressed deep concern over escalating insecurity in several states, specifically Borno, Katsina, Edo, and Plateau. They called for a comprehensive review and restructuring of Nigeria’s security architecture, advocating a bottom-up approach that empowers sub-national governments to play an active role in securing their territories.

Support for Governor Fubara and Convention Plans
Amid ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, the Forum declared its support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who has been embroiled in a fierce political crisis. They condemned any moves toward declaring a state of emergency in the state, describing such actions as politically motivated and undemocratic.
As part of its forward-looking agenda, the Forum announced plans to convene a national meeting on May 27, where the party’s Zoning Committee will be inaugurated. The meeting is in preparation for the PDP’s national convention scheduled for August 28–30, 2025, in Kano.
Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri was named Chairman of the Zoning Committee, while Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri will head the National Convention Committee.
This strategic meeting marks a pivotal step in the PDP’s reorganization efforts as it positions itself as the leading opposition force heading into the 2027 electoral contest.
