The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is taking urgent measures to address its worsening internal crisis, as the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), led by Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, met with the National Assembly Caucus on Wednesday in a bid to prevent a full-scale disintegration.
The PDP has been plagued by internal strife since its defeat in the 2023 presidential election, a loss that has resulted in a significant rift within the party.
The once-unified party is now split along several lines, with the divisions also affecting the National Working Committee (NWC). A faction of the NWC is aligned with Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The meeting, held at the PDP presidential campaign office in Abuja, known as Legacy House, is viewed as a last-ditch effort to resolve the party’s deepening crisis. Present at the meeting were key figures, including BoT Chairman Wabara, Secretary Ahmed Makarfi, Senate Deputy Minority Leader Lere Oyewumi, and House of Representatives Minority Whip Hon. Ali Isa JC.
The crisis within the PDP, which has seen major party figures taking opposing stances, threatens the future stability of one of Nigeria’s largest opposition parties.
Wike’s growing influence, despite his defection to a ministerial role in the current government, has further exacerbated tensions. His faction has clashed with other PDP stalwarts, adding to fears of a possible collapse if the issues are not swiftly addressed.
Wabara and the BoT’s involvement indicate the seriousness of the situation, with the party’s leadership making concerted efforts to restore unity.
Party members hope the National Assembly Caucus and the BoT can broker a compromise to keep the party intact.
As the PDP leadership navigates these troubled waters, many political observers are watching closely to see whether the party can emerge from this crisis stronger or face continued fragmentation.
