It was the height of insensitivity to retain Kanu in detention in defiance of court orders, Mike Ozokohme, the Lead Counsel for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, said.
The distinguished lawyer, who spoke after receiving the Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa) degree from the Abia State University Uturu, reminded President Muhammadu Buhari that the court had mandated Kanu’s unconditional release.
He further reminded the President that Kanu should be immediately released and should never again be brought before a Nigerian court, according to the Court of Appeal’s ruling that ordered his release.
Buhari should respect court orders by following judgments, according to Ozokohme.
In order to improve Nigeria’s reputation abroad, he pleaded on Nigerians to pressure Buhari to end any future delays in obeying court judgments.
The continued detention of the IPOB leader, according to Ozokohme, who claimed Kanu’s legal team had dismissed all 15 allegations against him, is unlawful.
“This insensitive and uncaring government has kept Kanu in DSS detention in a solitary confinement. This is injustice”, he said.
Ozokohme pleaded with President Buhari to release Kanu prior to his resignation.
