The Oyo State Government has confirmed 245 suspected cases of cholera between January 1 and October 7, 2024, with 23 of those cases confirmed and one death recorded.
This was disclosed by the state’s Commissioner for Health, Oluwasherimi Ajetumobi, during a press briefing at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan after the weekly Executive Council Meeting.
“The only death recorded was a patient brought from Lagos. Nine other patients currently on admission at the Infectious Disease Center, Olodo, Ibadan, are responding well to treatment and will soon be discharged,” Ajetumobi said.
She also discussed the state’s approval of a ₦210.243 million counterpart fund for an upcoming net distribution campaign in May 2025, part of efforts to combat malaria.
The initiative, supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will distribute over 5.6 million nets across Oyo State’s 33 local government areas.
“The counterpart fund will cover logistics, storage, distribution, and the net campaign’s planning. Malaria disproportionately affects children under five, pregnant women, and the elderly, leading to severe outcomes if not managed,” she added.
