Otti Leads LP Delegation to INEC, Submits Supreme Court Judgment

A key development in the Labour Party’s leadership crisis unfolded today as a delegation led by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, made a visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja.

The delegation, seeking to clarify the party’s leadership structure, formally presented a certified true copy of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on the matter.

The visit, which took place on Wednesday, saw the Labour Party team meet with INEC’s Acting Chairman, Sam Olumekun, along with other senior commissioners.

The core of the discussion centered around the implications of the Supreme Court judgment, which had nullified the Court of Appeal’s decision that recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the party.

In its ruling last Friday, the Supreme Court unanimously concluded that the Court of Appeal did not have the jurisdiction to confirm Abure’s position, as the case pertained to internal leadership issues within the party.

This judgment has prompted the Labour Party to take proactive steps in ensuring clarity and alignment with INEC on its official leadership.

Governor Otti emphasized that the meeting was intended to establish a mutual understanding and reinforce the Labour Party’s commitment to transparency and democratic principles.

“This engagement marks an important moment of collaboration aimed at strengthening the foundations of the Labour Party,” Otti said in a statement following the meeting.

In response, INEC’s Sam Olumekun reassured the Labour Party delegation of the commission’s dedication to remaining neutral and upholding the principles of law and fairness in all electoral matters.

The meeting underscores a pivotal moment in Nigerian politics, as the Labour Party works to resolve its internal disputes and strengthen its position within the national political landscape.
