Prosecutors on Thursday told an Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court how former Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice were arrested in London.
Prosecutors said that the couple was at the Heathrow airport on their way to Istanbul, Turkey when they were apprehended by the London Metropolitan Police.
They disclosed this while arraigning Ekweremadu and his wife before the Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court in the United Kingdom over attempted harvesting of organs.
Metropolitan Police had reportedly arrested the Nigerian couple over an alleged harvesting of the organ of an unidentified child.
On Thursday when the couple was arraigned, the Magistrate refused to grant them bail but ordered that they should be remanded in police custody till July 7.
Confirming the Ekweremadus’ arrest in a statement on Thursday, the Metropolitan Police had said the couple was charged to court following an investigation by its specialist crime team.
The prosecutors told the court that the couple was probably on their way to procure another organ due to their inability to harvest the organ of the boy.
The prosecutors reportedly further told the court that the Ekweremadus have a daughter suffering from a kidney-related disease and had been undergoing dialysis for some time.
According to them, the couple’s plan was to use an organ from the boy on their daughter requiring a kidney transplant.
