Ondo Guber: IGP Deploys Top Officers, Bans VIP Escorts from Polling Units, Collation Centers

As Ondo State gears up for its high-stakes gubernatorial election this Saturday, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has taken robust steps to ensure security by appointing DIG Sylvester Abiodun Alabi as the chief coordinator of police operations for the elections.

In a statement on Thursday, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi outlined that DIG Alabi’s mission is to enforce strategic security measures designed to maintain law and order, safeguarding both voters and the electoral process.

Additionally, the IGP has assigned AIG Bennett Igweh and CP Tunji Disu as AIG and CP of Elections, respectively, bolstering the team with top-level oversight.

To enhance security, there will be strict restrictions on vehicular movement across all roads, waterways, and other transportation routes from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Election Day.

Only essential service personnel including ambulances, fire services, and accredited media will have permission to operate during this period, ensuring a controlled environment for voters to exercise their rights peacefully.

The statement reads, “security aides and escorts attached to VIPs are banned from accompanying VIPs to polling booths and collation centres to prevent disruptions.

“Unauthorized security personnel and quasi-security agencies will not be permitted to operate during the election, and a strict ban on the use of sirens by unauthorized vehicles will be enforced.

“Special consideration will also be extended to individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and those facing mobility challenges to ensure that polling stations remain accessible.

“Designated election lines have been established for inquiries and reporting incidents. These lines will be publicized as soon as possible.

“The Nigeria Police Force urges citizens to report all suspicious activities that may threaten the integrity of the electoral process and reaffirms its commitment to fostering a safe and democratic environment as the state gears up for the elections”.
