An unspecified number of worshippers were feared killed on Sunday in an explosion that rocked St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, Owo town, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
It was gathered that the explosion occurred on the church premises while the mass was going on.
The incident resulted in pandemonium in the neighbourhood as residents scamper to safety.
A different source, however, claimed that an attack was carried out on the church, which is located behind the palace of the Olowo of Owo, by unidentified herdsmen who shot and killed worshippers.
A 37 seconds video on the incident has already gone viral.
But another source said an explosion rocked the church, killing many people.
Sources at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, said over 50 victims of the incident had been received at the hospital with many of them dead and some still alive.
Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, said the command would issue a statement after it had ascertained the cause of the incident.
