Ariyo, a student at Obada Idi-Emi High School in Ogun State, has reportedly died after allegedly receiving 162 strokes of the cane from a teacher.
According to activist Adetoun, who shared the story on Instagram, the incident followed an exchange over a dustbin in Ariyo’s classroom.
Adetoun alleged that the teacher had instructed students not to damage the newly provided dustbin, to which Ariyo jokingly responded that it was bought with their money. The teacher, reportedly angered by the remark, took the issue to the principal, who allegedly ordered Ariyo’s punishment.
Following the principal’s instruction, the teacher allegedly administered 162 cane strokes, during which Ariyo collapsed. Adetoun claimed that staff delayed taking him to a hospital, and he was later pronounced dead upon arrival.
A senior police officer, who spoke under anonymity, confirmed the incident and noted that police intervention helped ease rising tensions in the community.
“We are on the matter,” the officer stated. “The incident wanted to create tension, but we were able to douse it.”
The Ogun State Police Command has not yet responded to inquiries as of the time of this report.
