Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Sunday, paid tribute to two prominent Nigerian figures—former military president Ibrahim Babangida and the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion—during separate visits to Niger and Edo states, celebrating their birthdays and honoring their legacies.

Chief Igbinedion, who turned 90 on Sunday, hosted Obasanjo at a Thanksgiving Mass held by the Catholic Archbishop of Benin Diocese.

In his remarks, Obasanjo congratulated the Esama of Benin on reaching the milestone age, noting the significance of his achievements.

“Judging by the mammoth crowd that came to celebrate with you, your legacy in history is assured,” Obasanjo said, commending Igbinedion’s impact on his community and beyond.

After the celebration in Benin, Obasanjo traveled to Minna, Niger State, to felicitate with Babangida, who marked his 83rd birthday last month. Due to prior international engagements, Obasanjo had been unable to attend Babangida’s August 27 birthday celebration but took the opportunity to visit and convey his best wishes in person.

Reflecting on Babangida’s contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape, Obasanjo praised his counterpart’s enduring health and service to the nation.

“I could not do this earlier as I was outside the country,” Obasanjo explained, adding, “I pray for your continued good health and strength.”

In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo emphasized his deep respect for both Babangida and Igbinedion, highlighting their lasting influence on Nigeria’s history.
