Days after declaring seven of its personnel missing in action following an ambush by Boko Haram terrorists, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed the death of four officers. Two of the personnel have safely returned to base, while one remains missing.
NSCDC spokesman Babawale Afolabi, in a statement on Thursday, revealed that the attack occurred during an inspection tour of National Grid Installations in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, close to the boundary with Kaduna State.
The ambush targeted members of the Corps’ Special Squad deployed to safeguard critical infrastructure.
Commandant General of the NSCDC, Ahmed Audi, expressed deep condolences to the affected officers and their families.
Visiting the injured personnel at a medical facility, Dr. Audi commended their bravery and pledged the Corps’ unwavering support.
“The personnel demonstrated an unwavering determination and commitment to the service of their fatherland, hence deserve all the support they can get from the organisation and the government they swore allegiance to,” Audi said.
He assured the injured of full medical coverage and emphasized that the Corps values the welfare of its personnel.
The attack has drawn attention to the ongoing risks faced by security operatives in combating insurgency and safeguarding national assets.
According to Afolabi, the Corps recovered the bodies of the four fallen officers, with two survivors returning unscathed. Search efforts continue for the remaining missing officer.
The NSCDC remains resolute in its mission to protect critical infrastructure and assist in national security despite the challenges posed by insurgent activities.
