The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has debunked rumours of appointing an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), following speculations about the death of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who is currently on leave.
In a statement on Monday, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, clarified, “The Defence Headquarters wishes to state that it has not appointed any senior officer as acting Chief of Army Staff. No such appointment exists within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).”
Gusau explained that Lagbaja, currently on his 2024 annual leave, is well and in good health.
“The COAS is hale and hearty and will soon resume his normal duties at the end of his leave. Media organisations are advised to verify information with the appropriate authorities before spreading fake news. The Chief of Defence Staff had spoken with the COAS just a few minutes ago,” Gusau stated.
He added that Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, has been providing routine briefs to Lagbaja in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring there is no leadership vacuum within the Nigerian Army.
Gusau also criticised individuals spreading unfounded rumours, urging them to desist from such acts immediately.
“The DHQ urges individuals spreading unfounded rumours to stop doing so immediately,” he said.
In response to calls for a military takeover from a viral video circulating on social media, Gusau made it clear that the military remains committed to democracy and loyal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
He stated, “Those advocating for a military takeover, as seen in the viral video, should be aware that such actions amount to treason under the Constitution.”
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria is steadfast in its commitment to preserving and advancing our democracy. We remain loyal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and are focused on our statutory responsibilities, including safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity,” Gusau affirmed.
He highlighted that the relative peace in the country today is a direct result of the President’s support for the military and the dedication of the Armed Forces’ leadership.
Gusau further stressed, “The AFN and relevant security agencies have been mandated to take necessary action against any individual or group advocating for unconstitutional changes in the country.”
