The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has accused fuel marketers of charging inflated petrol prices, alleging that current pump prices are far above the actual market value.
The NLC claims that these inflated prices are burdening Nigerians, who are already suffering from intense economic hardship worsened by government policies.
“Our citizens are being exploited,” the NLC stated in a communique issued after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, adding that “suffering and hunger are escalating as a result of policies that are driving many into destitution.”
The organisation also urged the federal government to review policies it described as “anti-people,” asserting that immediate action is needed to ease the strain on Nigerians.
In response to long-standing labour issues, the NLC directed its state councils to begin an indefinite strike from December 1, 2024, in states that have not yet implemented the new minimum wage.
This action, according to the NLC, is a move to protest against the government’s unaddressed obligations to workers.
