The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has shed light on the tragic boat accident that claimed the life of Nollywood actor Junior Pope and seven others, attributing the disaster to a disregard for safety measures and lack of awareness.
Speaking during a safety campaign in Onitsha, NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, explained that the victims had failed to register their boat and were not wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.
The passengers’ actions within the boat also diverted the operator’s focus, resulting in a collision with a submerged wooden object that caused the boat to capsize.
NIWA stressed the critical importance of following safety guidelines, such as proper boat registration and wearing life jackets, noting that non compliance could lead to arrests, boat seizures, and even prosecution.
The agency also announced collaborative efforts with local governments and stakeholders to raise awareness among riverside communities about the looming 2024 flood season.
The campaign featured a live demonstration underscoring the life-saving significance of wearing life jackets.
Attendees included boat operators, community leaders, and other stakeholders, with NIWA reaffirming its dedication to promoting safety across Nigeria’s waterways, urging all parties to stay vigilant and prioritize safety.
