In a landmark achievement for Nigerian athletics, the trio of Ese Brume, Ruth Usoro, and Prestina Ochonogor secured their places in the women’s long jump final at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Tuesday.
This marks the first time in Olympic history that three Nigerian women have reached the final of this event.
Ese Brume, an Olympic bronze medallist, overcame a challenging start to deliver a clutch performance. Initially positioned in 9th place, Brume soared to a remarkable 6.7 metres in her final attempt, securing her spot in the final through automatic qualification.
Ruth Usoro made headlines with her impressive jump of 6.76 metres, while Prestina Ochonogor followed closely with a leap of 6.65 metres.
Their stellar performances ensured all three athletes advanced to the final, showcasing Nigeria’s growing prowess in the field.
The trio will compete for podium finishes alongside 12 other finalists on Thursday, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling and historic competition.
