Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, on Saturday, warned politicians planning to rig the 2023 general elections to desist.
Onaiyekan said with the current yearnings of Nigerians, the 2023 elections “will no longer be business as usual.”
The cleric spoke on Saturday at the Holy Trinity Church in Maitama, Abuja, at a service to mark his 40th anniversary as Bishop.
Onaiyekan warned politicians to “desist from any form of manipulation to their favour if not voted for”.
The cleric said those planning to “play games and schemes” must have a rethink and retrace their steps.
“They should allow this election to run in a free and fair way,” he said.
Onaiyekan said he had no special candidate, but only interested in the wishes of the electorate prevailing.
The cleric further warned that the current mood of Nigerians is not the type that would “quietly accept a rigged election.
“There will be serious repercussions if anybody doesn’t allow free and fair elections.”
