Nigerians are dragging President Muhammadu Buhari and his government on Twitter over the indefinite suspension of Twitter operatives in Nigeria.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, in a statement on Friday said that the microblogging and social networking service had been used to persistently undermine Nigeria’s corporate existence.
The ban came after Twitter earlier in the week deleted Buhari’s ‘civil war’ tweet for violating its rules.
Following the suspension, Nigerians have been condemning the development.
Below are some of the reactions:
@jacksonpbn: “Buhari’s indefinite suspension of @twitter in Nigeria is a confirmation of the tyrannical nature of the APC/Buhari’s Govt. It confirms the Govt as a colossal failure. It is an attempt to kill democracy, free speech and accountability. With or without @twitter, Buhari is doomed!”
@thesopejayy: “Federal Government suspends Twitter in Nigeria. Now I see why Jack chose to place the Headquarter in Ghana instead of Nigeria, A country where the leaders don’t practice democracy.Jack successfully dodged a bullet.”
@OgbeniDipo: “Does President Buhari and the federal government know how much young Nigerians make on social media platforms like Twitter daily? Does Lai Mohammed know the number of jobs being sustained by Twitter in Nigeria 🇳🇬? What is wrong with these people?”
@bertofakoloju: “I dont care about the amount of jobs… peace and security is primary. If twitter is a medium used to peddle fake news, cut it off pls!”
@buchi_baba: “You announce the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria using your Twitter account to announce Twitter you want to suspend in your country!!!
– Who are these set of people ffs 🤦🏽♂️”
@NotjustSalmanPR: “As FG has suspended Twitter in Nigeria, The best thing is for Jack to remove verifications from all government officials and suspend all of them because they have been using twitter to make all their announcements since 😂😂.
“This drama go sweet with Bigi Tropical and Kulikuli😁”
@renoomokri: “The suspension of the activities of @Twitter in Nigeria by the @MBuhari administration should be ignored by @Jack. The Buhari government has no means to effect the suspension, and even members of the administration are still on Twitter.
#TwitterSuspendBuharisAccount.
#TableShaker”
@patumeana: “Licensing of social media outlets is long overdue & welcomed in a law abiding Nation, irrespective of the underlying circumstances, which all parties are entitled to within their scope of business or territory or Nigeria’s corporate existence.”
@bravefacefunkie: “I don’t even give a hoot, if Twitter in Nigeria has to go, let it go. Nigeria comes first! What they did to the office of the Nigerian President was quite disrespectful. To them, America comes first, any other nation can burn to ashes for all they care!”
@aminualiyu11: “They’re so hypocritical. They condemned insurrection from those who invaded the Capitol building but came to other nations and supported the same act. The west is our enemy, only showing their humanity by mouth but deep inside, they benefit 4rm our woes.”
@UnclePamilerin: “If they want us to take this Twitter in Nigeria suspension serious, Buhari, Bashir, Femi Adesina, Lai Mohammed and the rest of the gang should first deactivate their account, then we will know that they mean business”
@firstladyship: “FG has suspended Twitter in Nigeria. Lai Mohammed has directed the NBC to block access to Twitter in Nigeria.
Jack bruised their ego big time. Full-blown dictatorship, Social Media Gag is finally here. They might try to suspend the Constitution. So get ready to hit the streets.”
