The Nigerian government has announced that it will now offer free cesarean sections for women in need, as part of a nationwide initiative to reduce maternal mortality.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, shared the news during the Nigeria Health Sector-Wide Joint Annual Review, a three-day event currently underway in Abuja.
Describing the programme as an ambitious step, Pate emphasised that it aims to significantly lower maternal and newborn deaths across the country.
A statement from the official X handle of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare confirmed the news: “In a powerful move, Coordinating Minister @muhammadpate just announced that Cesarean Sections for all Nigerian women who need them will now be FREE!”
Prof. Pate underscored the importance of accessible healthcare, stating that “no woman should lose her life simply because she cannot afford a C-section.”
Further details on the implementation of this initiative are expected.
