The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has assessed Nigeria as being at moderate risk of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus currently circulating in China and other regions.
In a statement on Monday, January 6, 2025, the NCDC, in collaboration with global partners including the World Health Organisation (WHO), US CDC, and UK Health Security Agency, said the evaluation is a critical step in guiding Nigeria’s preparedness and response strategies.
Dr Jide Idris, NCDC’s Director-General, revealed that there is no unusual rise in respiratory infections linked to HMPV in Nigeria but warned of potential risks given global trends.
“Nigeria operates a National Influenza Sentinel Surveillance (NISS) system across six geopolitical zones. Data as of now do not indicate an unusual increase in respiratory infections, including those caused by HMPV,” Idris said.
To bolster preparedness, the NCDC is ramping up surveillance at points of entry, issuing advisories, and enhancing laboratory capacity for HMPV testing.
“We are identifying quarantine facilities, deploying infection prevention materials, and developing public health advisories to raise awareness. An Entry Implementation Protocol on HMPV is also being developed,” Idris noted.
Hospitals nationwide have been advised to enhance infection prevention and control practices while training for healthcare workers on case management is underway.
Idris added, “State governments are urged to activate treatment or isolation centres to handle cases appropriately. Relevant medical supplies, including PPEs, have been stockpiled for rapid deployment.”
Addressing misinformation, Idris dismissed claims that the WHO had declared HMPV a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). “The rumour is false. The WHO has not made such a declaration,” he clarified.
The NCDC urged the public to remain vigilant, follow preventive measures, and rely on verified information from trusted health authorities.
