The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of Ihsanatu Shaaibu and an unnamed accomplice for allegedly abusing her five-year-old stepdaughter.
The case, which has sparked widespread outrage, was announced on Thursday in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, and shared on X (formerly Twitter).
According to Adejobi, the arrest was made earlier on Thursday, January 9, 2025, following the circulation of a disturbing viral video showing Shaaibu physically assaulting the child, leaving her with severe injuries.
The statement read, “CHILD ABUSE: In relation to the viral video where a woman identified as Ihsanatu Shaaibu physically abused and caused grievous injuries to her stepdaughter, a five-year-old.
“The suspects have been arrested today, Thursday 9th Jan 2025, and will be prosecuted as soon as investigations are concluded. We will keep you abreast of the proceedings.”
This development underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to addressing child abuse cases and ensuring justice for vulnerable children.
Investigations are ongoing, with the Force assuring the public that the suspects will be prosecuted promptly.
This incident follows a similar case involving a teacher, Stella Nwadigo, who was arrested and arraigned in Lagos State for physically assaulting a three-year-old pupil at Christ-Mitots International School, Ikorodu.
The abuse, captured on video, showed Nwadigo repeatedly slapping the young boy, Abayomi Micheal, sparking condemnation and legal action.
The rising cases of child abuse have drawn attention to the need for stricter enforcement of child protection laws in Nigeria.
Authorities continue to urge citizens to report such incidents promptly to ensure the safety and well-being of children.
