The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has put to rest speculations surrounding the status of senior women’s national team head coach, Randy Waldrum.
Contrary to rumours that the American tactician had resigned, the NFF clarified that Waldrum’s contract had simply expired following the conclusion of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
A senior official from the NFF, speaking to NigeriaFootball.ng on condition of anonymity, stated: “Coach Randy Waldrum did not resign from his position. His contract with the NFF was set to expire after the 2024 Olympic Games, which have now concluded. We are appreciative of his contributions to Nigerian football and the Super Falcons.”
Waldrum’s tenure, which spanned nearly four years, saw the Super Falcons break significant barriers. Notably, under his leadership, Nigeria advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Waldrum also steered the team to the Paris 2024 Olympics, ending a 16-year absence from the prestigious tournament.
With the American coach’s contract officially concluded, the NFF is turning its focus to finding a suitable successor to build on the foundation he laid.
“The NFF is now focusing on finding a new head coach who will build on the solid foundation established under Coach Waldrum’s tenure,” the official said. “We thank him for his commitment and service to Nigerian football and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Looking ahead, the NFF is planning to appoint a new head coach with ample time to prepare the team for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The tournament, set to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26, 2025, will provide the new coach a crucial opportunity to continue Waldrum’s legacy and lead the Super Falcons to greater success.
As the search for a new coach begins, Nigerian football fans will be eager to see who steps up to take the reins of one of Africa’s most successful women’s football teams.
