NCDC Chief Confirms No Ebola Vaccines in Nigeria, Outlines Measures

In a recent press briefing, the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed that there are currently no Ebola vaccines available in Nigeria.

The official emphasized the need for vigilant surveillance and rapid response protocols to contain any potential outbreak.

“There are vaccines and therapeutics available for some strains of the Ebola virus. The approved vaccine for the Zaire species (EBV) is not currently available in the country but can be obtained from the WHO Afro and does not protect against the Sudan virus,” the NCDC DG stated.

He added that while Nigeria is not equipped with a vaccine stockpile, efforts are in place to ensure that all necessary measures, including ramping up testing if the need arises, will be implemented promptly.

Despite the vaccine gap, the NCDC boss reassured the public that early detection and comprehensive response strategies significantly reduce both morbidity and mortality associated with the disease.

“Early recognition, isolation of patients, and initiation of supportive treatment, along with the implementation of infection and control measures in health facilities and homes, tracing and monitoring of contacts, and safe burial practices, significantly reduce the probability of death,” he explained.

Health authorities have stressed that these protocols are the cornerstone of Nigeria’s preparedness strategy.

In the event of an Ebola outbreak, the government is prepared to intensify testing and surveillance efforts swiftly to curb the spread of the virus.

The NCDC’s approach is built on lessons learned from previous outbreaks in the region, emphasizing that rapid containment is key to preventing widespread transmission.

The absence of an approved vaccine for the Sudan strain of Ebola, combined with limited availability of the vaccine for the Zaire strain, underscores the importance of non-pharmaceutical interventions.

Health officials have urged all healthcare providers and communities to adhere strictly to infection control practices and report any suspicious cases immediately.

As part of its ongoing efforts to keep the public informed, the NCDC is collaborating closely with international partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), to monitor the global Ebola situation and secure necessary resources should an outbreak occur.

Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow updates from official sources, including joining the NCDC’s WhatsApp channel for real-time alerts.

With Ebola remaining one of the most feared infectious diseases globally, the proactive stance taken by Nigerian health authorities aims to ensure that, even in the absence of locally available vaccines, robust measures are in place to safeguard public health.
