The Nigerian Navy has uncovered a large-scale illegal refining operation with a production capacity of over two million liters of Automated Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, and an equivalent amount of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
The discovery was made within the creeks of Isaka and Bakana Ogoloma in the Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, South-South Nigeria.
Commodore Cajethan Aniaku, the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, expressed shock at the extent of the illegal operation and the resulting environmental damage. He emphasized the Navy’s commitment to eradicating illegal oil bunkering activities in the region.
“The level of economic sabotage we have witnessed here is alarming,” Commodore Aniaku stated.
“The devastation of the ecosystem is also concerning. We will not relent in our efforts to rid this area of illegal refining activities.”
The operation to access the illegal site was challenging due to the swampy terrain, which was worsened by recent heavy rainfall. Naval personnel, accompanied by journalists, had to navigate the difficult conditions to reach the extensive illegal refining site.
At the site, a wellhead used to siphon crude oil was found still spilling its contents into the surrounding water. The illegal operators had not yet sealed it off, allowing crude oil to continue contaminating the environment.
Commodore Aniaku noted that he was surprised by the new methods employed by the illegal refiners, who have begun using drums to refine stolen crude oil.
He warned that the Nigerian Navy would intensify its efforts to apprehend those involved in this economic sabotage and ensure the area is cleared of illegal activities.
“We are committed to continuing our onslaught against oil thieves,” Aniaku asserted.
“Our goal is to ensure that illegal bunkering activities are totally eradicated in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.”
The discovery highlights the ongoing battle against illegal refining in the Niger Delta, as the Nigerian Navy intensifies its crackdown on operations that threaten the nation’s economy and environment.
