The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), in collaboration with the producers of Big Bull Rice, has uncovered a large-scale counterfeit rice operation in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The agency raided shops in Woji, Mile 3, and Mile 1 markets, where it seized over 120 fake bags of rice and discovered an illegal distribution hub for counterfeit Big Bull Rice on the YKC axis of Woji.
During the operation, officials found a substantial quantity of empty fake Big Bull Rice bags, along with counterfeit versions of other brands such as Cap Rice, Stallion Rice, Tomato Rice, and Mama Pride.
A salesgirl, identified as Ogechi Okafor, was arrested at the scene.
Pharm. Emmanuel Onogwu, NAFDAC’s Rivers State Coordinator, provided insights into the findings.
“We recovered sewing and sealing machines, a generator, a stove, thread, and several bags of already rebagged rice, ready for sale. This illegal activity poses a serious threat to public health,” he said.

Onogwu further explained how to identify original Big Bull Rice, stating, “Genuine Big Bull Rice bags have a distinct shiny ribbon across the threaded top, superior bag quality, and an authentic logo. Consumers should be vigilant when purchasing rice to avoid falling victim to these counterfeit products.”
He also warned of the dangers of rebagged rice, stressing that such products often come from questionable sources and may be treated with harmful chemicals to enhance their appearance.
“These fake products are not only deceptive but can also cause severe health issues,” he cautioned.
NAFDAC confirmed that the seized counterfeit rice has been transported to its Zonal Office for further investigation, as the agency continues its crackdown on food fraud and unsafe products in Nigerian markets.
