LGs Financial Autonomy: Tinubu lauds Supreme Court’s ruling, vows improved governance

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has hailed the recent judgment by the Supreme Court of Nigeria affirming the statutory rights of local governments, describing it as a significant stride towards advancing his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The agenda, he stressed, prioritizes the interests of the people and aims to revitalize grassroots governance across Nigeria.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu emphasized that the Supreme Court’s decision aligns perfectly with the constitutional provisions governing local government autonomy.

He noted that ineffective local government administration has been a longstanding challenge hindering Nigeria’s progress, highlighting the crucial role of local councils in delivering people-oriented services.

“The judgement empowers citizens, particularly the poor, to hold local leaders accountable for their actions,” President Tinubu affirmed.

He underscored the newfound transparency in local government funding, stressing that services must now be provided without excuses.

President Tinubu’s administration initiated the legal challenge to ensure that elected officials, not appointees, manage local resources for the benefit of the people.

He hailed the ruling as pivotal in restructuring Nigeria’s governance framework and economy, aiming to create a fairer society accessible to all citizens.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda is about the people of this country, irrespective of faith, tribe, gender, or political affiliation. By this judgement, our people – especially the poor – will hold local leaders accountable,” President Tinubu stated.

He acknowledged the Supreme Court’s affirmation of local governments’ financial autonomy as historic, reinforcing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s federal structure for national development.

President Tinubu also commended the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), for his dedication to the case, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to upholding constitutional principles.

President Tinubu concluded by reiterating his administration’s resolve to build an efficient and performance-driven governance system that benefits all Nigerians, promising enhanced delivery of essential amenities and public goods at the grassroots level.

The statement underscored President Tinubu’s optimism that the judgment marks a turning point towards achieving a more equitable and prosperous Nigeria, where every citizen’s rights and aspirations are safeguarded under the rule of law.
