Leave or Be Arrested, FCTA Warns Roadside Beggars

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has warned roadside beggars to stop their activities or face arrest by enforcement agents.

The warning was delivered by the minister during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of the access road to the newly inaugurated judges’ quarters in Katampe.

The minister expressed concern over the increasing number of individuals begging on the streets, stating it poses a significant security threat to the metropolis. He issued an ultimatum for beggars to vacate the streets by October 27, 2024.

On the same day, the minister reflected on his previous decision to revoke the certificate of occupancy (C of O) for certain plots of land allocated to Julius Berger, a German construction giant, in the Katampe District of Abuja.

The event for the judges’ quarters was attended by notable figures, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and the President of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem.

During the ceremony, the minister announced that 70% of the funding for the judges’ quarters project had already been released following its approval by the Federal Executive Council last month. Of the 40 units to be constructed, 20 will be designated for the FCT High Court, 10 for the Federal High Court, and 10 for the Court of Appeal.
