The Lagos State government has revealed plans to begin enforcing the prohibition of single-use plastics (SUPs) within the next two weeks.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this announcement while inspecting flood-prone zones and assessing ongoing and newly initiated projects on Lagos Island, concluding at the Ilubirin Waterfront.
Wahab reminded the public of the government’s December 2024 announcement, which banned the use of Styrofoam and SUPs for packaging, with enforcement scheduled to start in January 2025.
He explained that this aligns with an earlier decision in January 2024, where Styrofoam was banned across Lagos State due to its increasing contribution to environmental degradation.
“There is no turning back on the complete ban of SUPs,” Wahab stated during an interview at the Ilubirin Pump Station.
“Discussions are ongoing to outline the phasing-out process, and enforcement will officially begin before the end of January.”
He further noted that littering caused by Styrofoam has significantly declined since the initial implementation of the ban.
Discussing the condition of infrastructure at Ilubirin, Wahab said, “The previous administration constructed high-quality infrastructure, including roads, effective drainage systems, and pedestrian walkways. Unfortunately, human activities have caused severe blockages and damage.
“This inspection was necessary because the Governor has re-awarded the contract to revamp Lagos Island’s infrastructure.
“We’re here to ensure contractors are prepared and determine if the project timeline can be shortened,” Wahab added.
