The Labour Party (LP) has embraced an offer by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, to run as Peter Obi’s deputy in the 2027 presidential race.

Kwankwaso, in a recent viral post, expressed his willingness to serve as Obi’s running mate, just two years after failed talks between the two parties ahead of the 2023 elections. At that time, both candidates were unable to agree on who would lead the coalition.

In a video circulated online, Kwankwaso acknowledged his political stature, stating, “I’m bigger than Peter Obi politically; I’m his elder brother… I’ve no problem with deputising for Peter Obi, but only if certain conditions are met.”

He emphasized the importance of establishing trust before any discussions with Obi.

In the 2023 election, Obi secured over six million votes, placing third, while Kwankwaso garnered nearly 1.5 million votes, finishing in fourth place.

The Labour Party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk, welcomed Kwankwaso’s offer, urging him to refrain from comparing their political accomplishments.

“We are happy Kwankwaso is willing to offer himself as Obi’s deputy after seeing Obi’s electoral strength. However, he should stop this talk of being a bigger politician and PhD holder,” Farouk said.

Farouk emphasized that a merger between Obi and Kwankwaso could be beneficial for Nigerians in their bid to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
