KWASU Reacts as JAMB Slams Ban on Law Programme

The management of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has expressed its commitment to adhering to the one-year suspension of its law programme, as directed by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

This follows JAMB’s announcement on the 29th of January, 2025, revealing that it will not be conducting admissions for the law programme in eight universities, including KWASU, due to the Council of Legal Education (CLE) suspending the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme for the 2025/2026 academic session.

In response, the university issued a statement through Dr. Saeedat Aliyu, the Acting Director of University Relations, explaining that the suspension stems from KWASU’s launch of its law programme in 2018, which initially had only the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC). The statement clarified that “KWASU currently has full accreditation from both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Council for Legal Education (CLE) to run 2 undergraduate law programmes: Common Law and Common and Islamic Law.”

Importantly, the suspension will not affect students already enrolled in the Faculty of Law. The management reassured the public that “the 1-year ban does not in any way affect students currently running their programmes in the University’s Faculty of Law.”

KWASU also emphasized that it holds regulatory bodies in high regard and will fully comply with the sanctions, refraining from offering admission to the law programmes for the 2025/2026 session.

The university further encouraged prospective law candidates to consider applying to other outstanding programmes offered by KWASU, all of which are fully accredited.
