The Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah says political actors are responsible for electoral violence in Nigeria.
He has, therefore, called on them, ahead of the 2023 general elections, to play by the rules.
He stated this on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
Kukah, said efforts were ongoing to ensure that politicians are held responsible for any violence that breaks out during elections.
He said, “The problem has been some of the (political) actors in these processes.
“They see the dangers that are posed by all these crises. INEC continues to wrestle with the problem of who is responsible?
“The security agencies tell you that we are here to just keep order. INEC does not have the capacity and is overwhelmed by court cases.”
On what the National Peace Committee is doing to consolidate Nigeria’s democracy, Kukah said the committee is exploring options to improve the electoral process.
He hinted that one of the measures is to ensure political parties and their candidates sign the peace accord early enough before the commencement of elections.
