Kogi Gov Mourns Victims as Boat Capsize Claims Lives

Tragedy struck in Kogi State as a boat carrying passengers from Kupa Ebe to Katcha Market capsized near Kpata Danbo, leaving many feared dead.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, has prompted widespread mourning and urgent rescue efforts.

Governor Usman Ododo expressed deep sadness over the accident and extended heartfelt condolences to the affected families.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, it was confirmed that 24 passengers have been rescued and are receiving medical care in nearby facilities.

“Sadly, many more are feared dead,” Fanwo said, emphasizing that rescue operations are ongoing.

Governor Ododo has directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide immediate relief materials to the affected families.

He also instructed the Ministry of Health to ensure survivors receive comprehensive medical attention.

The statement commended the swift intervention of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), River Marshals, and Katcha Local Government authorities in Niger State, who have worked alongside state and federal teams to manage the crisis.

In response to the tragedy, the Kogi State Government has called for stricter safety protocols in marine transportation.

Operators have been urged to avoid night voyages and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent future occurrences.

“The Government remains committed to implementing legal and administrative measures to safeguard the lives of waterway users,” Fanwo stated.

As rescue operations continue, Governor Ododo appealed to all involved agencies to intensify their efforts to save more lives.

“May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their families find strength during this difficult time,” the governor added.

The accident highlights the urgent need for improved safety regulations and enforcement in Nigeria’s water transportation sector, particularly in regions heavily reliant on waterways for daily commerce and commuting.
